Direct action at the Ladies’ Pond on 28 July 2024

DIRECT ACTION AT THE KENWOOD LADIES’ POND
The KLPA management committee has for some time been aware that a group of women led by ‘radical feminist activists based in the UK’ propose to stage what they describe as a ‘direct action/live art performance surrounding Kenwood Ladies Pond in Hampstead Heath reclaiming it as a woman-only space’.
As regular swimmers at the Ladies’ Pond know, it has always been and remains a women-only space. It is not open to men and there is no need to ‘reclaim’ it.
We understand that the demonstrators hold gender-critical views and are opposed to the City of London’s policy of permitting transgender women to swim at the Ladies’ Pond, which accords with the provisions of the Equality Act 2010. We trust that on the day they will respect the right of other women who may not share their views to swim there without hindrance or fear.
The KLPA is a user group and does not manage the Ladies’ Pond or determine its admission policies. However, with the support of a significant majority of members (confirmed at the AGM in March 2024) the KLPA continues to welcome transgender women who wish to join.
